Rorbuer | Hamnøy, Norway by elmofoto The red cabins on the right are part of the small village where we stayed. . A Norwegian friend who was traveling with us explained that there’s a very simple, practical reason these cabins were traditionally (and largely still are) painted this red color: red pigment was the cheapest 🙂 Although the cabins pictured here are a few hundred years old (at most), rorbuer have a very long history on the Lofoten Islands, the earliest ones having been built starting in the 12th century.
